Why hospitals commission UKAS accredited slip testing

Hospitals carry combined patient-occupier, visitor and staff exposure for slip incidents. NHS Trusts are insured via NHS Resolution and routinely commission UKAS accredited slip testing to support Trust Board reporting, incident investigation, and capital project acceptance. Private hospitals operate commercial insurance and similar risk management.

Specific issues we see in hospitals

• A&E entrance zones. Highest-footfall entrance on the estate, with maximum wet-weather contamination. Matting adequacy and transition zone PTV are critical.
• Operating suite approaches. Immediate pre-theatre and scrub areas have particular cleanliness requirements that affect surface specification. Testing is part of operational validation.
• Ward corridors. Patient wet-floor-sign zones after cleaning. Testing documents whether cleaning-cycle risk is managed or a chronic issue.
• External pedestrian routes. Route from car parks to main entrances. Seasonal exposure. Often commissioned during post-incident work.

Which standards apply

BS EN 16165 Annex C for general pedestrian surfaces. Specific protocols for wet areas (hydrotherapy pools, patient bathrooms) using Slider 55 and barefoot-appropriate thresholds. UKSRG Issue 6 operational protocol.

Our reports are accepted by NHS Resolution in their claims assessment processes. We do not contract with NHS Resolution directly — we contract with the Trust or its legal representatives.

Can you test during clinical operation?

Yes — testing is discrete and can be scheduled in non-clinical periods or in areas not in clinical use.

Post-incident Serious Untoward Incident (SUI)?
